South African photographer, inspired by nature and people

The back story

Theus Badenhorst, a South African photographer born in 1976, has always seen the world through a unique lens. As a child, he was drawn to abstract patterns and colors, rather than traditional subjects, showing an early penchant for breaking artistic norms. His curiosity and non-conformist spirit led him to constantly question boundaries and societal expectations, a trait that stayed with him into adulthood.

From a young age, Theus grappled with deep questions about existence and truth, seeking a means to express his intense emotions and experiences. Despite facing mental health challenges like depression, he persevered and found a path to self-discovery and creative authenticity.

Theus and Stephani embrace a minimalist lifestyle and live in a tiny off-the-grid shanty, similar to the numerous ones you will see in the townships of his native South Africa.

His journey into photography began modestly, capturing moments with a phone camera before upgrading to a Sony mirrorless camera. This transition marked the start of his exploration into documentary photojournalism, a passion that has since flourished. His latest work, the photo essay "Trash People," delves into the realities faced by the community of Zithobeni, revealing the impact of mismanaged waste on their lives. Through his lens, Theus not only portrays the harshness of life on a dump site but also illuminates moments of resilience and hope within this environment.

Art, for Theus, is intertwined with identity and a reflection of one's inner truth. He believes that through creative expression and confronting personal doubts, we uncover our authentic selves. This philosophy, shaped by his experiences and insights, fuels his artistic endeavors. Today, Theus lives on a farm near Bronkhorstspruit with his partner, Stephani, and a lively collection of five dogs and five horses. Theus is father to 3 children who are both his greatest supporters and his motivation to reach ever further.

His ongoing evolution as a photographer mirrors his journey of self-discovery, always seeking to capture not just images, but the essence of human experience.

I would love to hear from you.
